Detection and Prevention
Premier Health is committed to helping you prevent or delay the onset of diabetes through screening and education. Although you can manage diabetes, it is a chronic disease that does not go away, even with treatment. The good news is that healthy lifestyle habits can help you control diabetes.
Staying Healthy With Good Lifestyle Choices
Eating healthy, losing weight and getting regular exercise all can help you prevent or delay the onset of diabetes, but it’s hard to make big changes. It’s often easier to make small, specific changes to your habits, like adding a piece of fruit to your daily meal plan or walking 15 minutes after lunch. Even little steps like these can help you guard against diabetes.
If you’re at risk for diabetes, however, be sure to consult with your doctor about what lifestyle changes may be best for you.
Knowing the Risk Factors
Knowing what factors put you at risk for diabetes can help you and your doctor make decisions about your health. A few common risk factors are:
- Family history of diabetes
- High blood pressure
- History of gestational diabetes
- Impaired glucose tolerance
- Older age
- Obesity
- Physical inactivity
You should talk with your doctor if you have any of these factors. Early awareness of diabetes risk can give you the opportunity to make important changes to your lifestyle.
Community Diabetes Screenings
