For many neurological conditions there are no screening tests or warning signs. We know that genetic links, risk factors such as diabetes and heart disease, and lifestyle choices — such as smoking, diet, and exercise — may all play a role.

No matter the cause of your condition, we use the resources of our Clinical Neuroscience Institute to identify and manage your neurological condition.

TeleStroke Network

The TeleStroke Network at Premier Health enables a rapid stroke diagnosis and treatment, with the goal of a better outcome, at emergency departments throughout Southwest Ohio. With stroke, time is brain. The faster you receive treatment, the more effective it will be.

We combine our specialty doctors’ experience with advanced imaging to treat patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Using a special computer link, our on-call stroke specialists can see patients, ask questions and view test results — all in real time, regardless of the distance between you and our stroke specialist. The emergency department doctors work with our stroke specialist to decide if you need acute stroke therapy. Depending on your needs, you may receive all of your treatment right where you are.

Patients who need the highest level of stroke care are transferred via CareFlight Air and Mobile Services to Miami Valley Hospital for advanced stroke care.

Advanced Medical Imaging and Other Tests

At Premier Health, we use advanced imaging to diagnose a full range of neurological conditions. Our technologies include:

  • CT (Computed tomography). CT combines computer software and X-rays to form clear images of the organs and tissues inside the body.
  • MRI (magnetic resonance imaging). Our MRI machines use magnets and radio waves to create detailed images of the brain and other parts of the body. They’re equipped with advanced capabilities to create images of the neurological and vascular systems.
  • MRA (magnetic resonance angiography). This MRI creates images of the blood vessels in your head and neck.
  • PET/CT Positron emission tomography. PET uses a radioactive tracer to check blood flow, metabolism and oxygen use in a specific organ. PET combined with CT provides a more complete picture of an organ’s health.
  • EEG (electroencephalogram). This test checks for changes in your brain waves. Small pads, or electrodes, are attached to your scalp to monitor brain activity.
  • Video EEG monitoring. Performed in an inpatient unit, this testing helps diagnose or monitor epilepsy.
  • Nuclear medicine. Images of your bones are created by using a radioactive dye to spot a problem and diagnose, determine the severity of, or treat a variety of diseases, including many types of cancers, , neurological disorders and other abnormalities within the body.
  • X-rays. Images of your bones and internal structures are captured using electromagnetic waves of energy.
  • Cerebral catheter angiograms. This minimally invasive procedure creates detailed images of blood vessels in the brain. A catheter is threaded from an artery in the leg up into the brain, where a contrast dye is released. X-ray cameras record how the dye moves through the brain.
  • Cerebrospinal fluid testing. A sample of spinal fluid is tested for signs of infection or other neurological conditions. The fluid is obtained through a lumbar puncture.

Our neuroscience operating rooms are equipped with advanced navigation systems for brain mapping and CT.

Stroke Screenings

While no one can prevent a stroke, there are some known risk factors that you can control, including:

  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Smoking

You can decrease your stroke risk by keeping these risk factors under control.

Community Outreach

At Premier Health, we work hard to provide community education about neuroscience conditions and steps you can take to prevent these conditions. We sponsor and participate in special events and programs that let us share information with different populations in the communities we serve.
