People that should be evaluated for skin cancer include anyone who has a suspicious looking mole. You can be evaluated by your family doctor or you can go to more specific people, such as a dermatologist. Typically the plastic surgeons and the general surgeons don't see this until they've seen another doctor and then get referred on to them. There are some skin lesions that can increase risk for skin cancers. Most of them your family doctor would know about them and be able to tell you about it. People who have strong family histories of melanoma can be at a higher risk for developing a melanoma. A melanoma does have a hereditary factor to it in some cases.
