Advancing Care with AI: Insights from Epic’s Annual Conference
By Walter Reiling, MD, system chief medical information officer, Premier Health; and Mandy Via, system director of access, referral management, and telehealth, Premier Health
Epic’s annual Users Group Meeting in Verona, Wisconsin, showcased how artificial intelligence is transforming patient care and clinical workflows.
One highlight was AI-powered clinical summaries, which provide specialty-specific overviews of patient records. Early adopters report improvements in discharge documentation and efficiency when reviewing complex cases. Epic is also expanding its deidentified database of 300 million+ patient records to directly support clinical care, enabling physicians to compare similar cases and strengthen differential diagnoses.
AI is also helping manage in-basket messages by drafting responses — including patient advice requests — to save time while ensuring accuracy. Epic’s new EMMIE virtual assistant within MyChart will further enhance patient engagement.
These innovations complement Premier Health’s ongoing Ambient Documentation pilot with Nuance/Microsoft’s DAX, which uses conversational, speech-based EMR interactions. Positive early feedback has paved the way for a broader rollout this fall, with more features expected through 2026.
Together, these tools mark an exciting step forward in how Premier Health can streamline workflows, reduce administrative burden, and improve patient care.
