CryoAblation Catheter System
Premier Health is the first health care provider to introduce to Southwest Ohio an innovative, minimally invasive cardiac ablation treatment for atrial fibrillation (AFib).
The treatment, using the Arctic Front Advance™ Cardiac CryoAblation Catheter System, involves a balloon catheter that is frozen with liquid nitrogen to scar and disable heart tissue that sends out the electrical currents that trigger the irregular heart rhythms of AFib.
The catheter, a flexible tube, is guided through a vein into your heart. The balloon, at the end of the catheter, is frozen and inflated, to come in contact with the targeted tissue.
The balloon is designed to cover and treat larger areas of tissue simultaneously, so it takes less time than conventional ablation treatments. This benefits patients, lowering risk, as the procedure requires less time under anesthesia. And, compared to ablation treatments that use radiofrequency, or heat, this treatment has a lower risk of strokes and clots.
The CryoAblation Catheter System is used primarily for patients who have paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. That is, their AFib symptoms come and go. But the treatment is also used for other forms of atrial fibrillation.
