More Breast Diagnostic Tools
When your health care provider needs additional information to diagnose a breast condition, Premier Health offers two valuable tools, breast MRI and breast biopsy.
Breast MRI
Breast MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) can provide valuable information about a breast condition that can’t be obtained using mammography or ultrasound. As with breast ultrasound, MRI is a supplement to mammography and not a replacement for it.
Breast MRI provides:
- Assessment of abnormal areas seen on a mammogram
- Evaluation of extremely dense breast tissue
- Detection and characterization of breast disease
- Assessment of disease extent
- Guidance for biopsy and localization
- Evaluation of treatment response
- Evaluation of breast implants for leaks or ruptures
It’s also sometimes used in screening certain groups of women, such as young women at high risk for breast cancer.
Fast Breast MRI
Premier Health offers Fast Breast MRI, a 10-minute self-pay examination. Women with dense breasts or at a higher risk for breast cancer can now choose Fast Breast MRI at Premier Health as a second step (following a mammogram) for breast cancer screening. It’s important to note that Fast Breast MRI isn’t a replacement for an annual mammogram.
Breast Biopsy
Breast biopsy is a procedure in which part or all of a suspicious breast growth is removed, using a needle or similar device, and examined. Premier Health offers a variety of breast biopsy options to evaluate suspicious breast tissue. These options include image-guided biopsy – using ultrasound, MRI, or stereotactic guidance – or open surgical biopsy.
In both cases, the tissue obtained is sent to the pathology lab for analysis with results available to your physician usually within 72 hours.
An open surgical biopsy is usually done as a same-day procedure in an operating room. The tissue of the area in question, as well as some adjacent tissue, is surgically removed.
Scout® Wire-Free Radar Localization System
Most Premier Health hospitals use the SCOUT® wire-free radar localization system. It more accurately targets breast tumors for removal and aims to ease anxiety for patients. Instead of patients having a wire inserted into the breast to mark a tumor’s location (often on the day of surgery), a SCOUT® reflector (smaller than a dime) is placed in advance. During the surgery, the SCOUT® guide uses real-time distance measurement guidance to accurately detect the location of the SCOUT® reflector and direct the surgeon to the tumor, within 1mm of accuracy. SCOUT® also is used to localize high-risk, non-cancerous lesions.
The ability to precisely locate tumors increases the probability of complete cancer removal and reduces the likelihood of needing follow-up surgeries — a huge advantage for early-stage breast cancer patients. In addition, the ability to strategically plan the incision may result in better cosmetic outcomes.
