Minimally Invasive Surgery
Many surgeries at Premier Health use a minimally invasive approach.
Instead of one large incision (cut), minimally invasive surgeries use a few tiny incisions. Into one of these incisions your surgeon puts a laparoscope (a thin tube with a video camera on it) to guide the procedure. Small instruments like a clamp and knife are placed into the other incisions.
Guided by video from the laparoscope, your surgeon will perform your procedure. When your surgery is completed, your surgeon will use one or two stitches or surgical adhesive (glue) to close each incision.
This minimally invasive technique may be called one of the following, depending on where in the body your surgeon will operate:
- Endoscopic surgery
- Laparoscopic surgery
- Thoracoscopic surgery
- Keyhole surgery
Robotic surgery is a type of minimally invasive surgery. Learn more.

Can My Surgeon Use a Minimally Invasive Approach?
Your surgeon and team of caregivers want your recovery to be as quick as possible so that you can get back to home, work, and your daily routine. That’s why, whenever possible, we’ll recommend a minimally invasive approach. Your overall health and safety are our number one concern.
