Bladder and Pelvic Health

If you have a pelvic or bladder problem, you’re not alone. Problems like urinary leakage (incontinence) painful intercourse and the slippage ( prolapse) of pelvic organs can be embarrassing, but they’re common. In fact, over a lifetime, three out of four women report some degree of urinary leakage, and one in three may experience prolapse. You can look to Premier Health gynecologists for understanding and help.

There are three major types of pelvic floor disorders:

Pelvic Organ Prolapse

Prolapse describes a relaxation of the bladder, rectum, uterus, and/or intestine. It occurs when these organs fall out of place because the supporting tissue has weakened. The most common result is a feeling of heaviness, pressure or bulging in the vaginal area.

Weak Bladder And Bowel Control

When the muscles in your pelvis area are weak, you may have urinary or rectal leakage. These are common problems experienced by women of all ages and physical capabilities. A solution can often be found with one or more of the following:

  • Physical therapy to improve the strength, mobility and fitness of your pelvic muscles
  • Biofeedback to learn how to use your body’s signals to improve your health
  • Low-grade electric stimulation to constrict your pelvic muscles
  • Changes in lifestyle and behavior

Painful Bladder

When the bladder becomes inflamed, you may experience:

  • Urgent need to urinate
  • Frequent urination, especially at night
  • Inability to empty your bladder
  • Blood in the urine (hematuria)
  • Pain when urinating
