Joint Replacement Services

Joint problems such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and past injuries can cause the bone and cartilage in the joint to wear. Joint pain is a common result. If non-surgical treatments have failed, joint replacement surgery may be an option to relieve your pain.

Robotic-Arm Assisted Joint Replacement

Premier Health offers advanced robotic-arm assisted knee and hip replacement procedures, using ROSA® Knee and Mako SmartRobotics™, so your surgeon can create a customized plan based on your unique anatomy for a more predictable, precise surgery.

ROSA® Knee For Knee Replacement

How It Works

Before your surgery, with ROSA® (Robotic Surgical Assistant) Knee, a series of X-rays may be used to create a 3D model of your knee anatomy. This 3D model will enable your surgeon to plan many specifics of your knee replacement prior to surgery.

During your procedure, ROSA Knee serves as your surgeon’s robotic assistant. ROSA Knee uses a camera and optical trackers attached to your leg to know exactly where your knee is in space. If your leg moves even a fraction of an inch, the robot can tell and adjusts accordingly. This helps ensure that the plan your surgeon put into place is executed as intended. Throughout your surgery, ROSA Knee provides your surgeon with data about your knee. This information, combined with your surgeon’s skill, helps your doctor know how to position your implant based on your unique anatomy.

How It Helps Patients

Getting a precise knee implant fit is important to your comfort and overall experience following knee replacement surgery. ROSA Knee uses data collected before and during surgery to inform your surgeon of many details related to your unique anatomy that may affect your implant fit. By using this data to make more informed decisions, your surgeon is able to plan for and carry out a personalized surgery based upon your individual needs.

Mako SmartRobotics™ For Knee And Hip Replacement

How It Works

Mako SmartRobotics™ combines three key components — 3D CT-based planning, AccuStop™ haptic technology, and insightful data analytics — into one platform that has shown better outcomes for patients needing total knee, total hip, and partial knee replacements.

Before surgery, your surgeon can use the Mako System to create a personalized surgical plan and identify the desired implant size, orientation, and alignment based on your unique anatomy. During surgery, the Mako System enables your surgeon to make any needed adjustments while guiding the robotic arm to execute the plan.

How It Helps Patients

Mako SmartRobotics™ helps surgeons know more and cut less. In clinical studies, Mako SmartRobotics™ for Total Knee has been associated with less pain, less need for opioid pain medication and inpatient physical therapy, reduction in length of hospital stay, improved knee flexion, and greater soft tissue protection in comparison to manual techniques. In clinical studies, Mako Total Hip resulted in more accurate placement and alignment of hip implants based on the surgical plan, less likelihood of hip dislocation, reduced blood loss, replication of the feeling of a natural hip, and preservation of healthy bone.

Knee Replacement

The knee joint is one of the most complicated joints in the body and most prone to injury. Replacement is often a result of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis or other diseases or injury.

A total knee replacement, or total knee arthroplasty involves removing diseased portions of the knee joint to shape the bones to accommodate the knee implant.

Knees do not wear evenly. Sometimes one part of the knee is fine while another part is destroyed. Depending on the location of the damage, a partial knee replacement may be a surgical option. A partial knee replacement involves only the worn-out portion of the knee.

Hip Replacement

The hip joint is a ball and socket joint. Hip pain is a common complaint, often caused by arthritis or injury and a deterioration of the cartilage.

In a total hip replacement surgery or hip arthroplasty your thigh bone (femur) and your sockets are replaced with artificial materials.

The design of the artificial hip offers you renewed stability and function. Hip replacements can help reduce or relieve pain, help your hip to work better, and restore normal walking and other movements.

The surgical technique depends on your condition and your surgeon. The different approaches include:

  • Anterior approach, where the incision is made at the front of your hip
  • Posterior approach, where the incision is made on the side of your hip or leg
  • Direct lateral approach, where the incision is made on the side of the hip or leg using a procedure similar to the anterior approach

Shoulder Replacement

The shoulder joint is a ball and socket joint. It includes the rotator cuff, which is essential for range of motion.

If your shoulder socket is healthy and shows no signs of arthritis, your doctor may recommend a partial shoulder replacement to relieve your pain. In this procedure only the ball of the shoulder joint is replaced, so there’s less bone removal requiring a smaller incision than with a total shoulder replacement.

Total shoulder replacement removes the diseased and damaged bone in your shoulder. It is replaced with an artificial shoulder including a plastic cup, which is fitted into the shoulder socket, and a metal ball attached to the top of the upper arm bone.

In some instances, a reverse total shoulder replacement is best. This approach may be recommended if you have a deficient rotator cuff, arthritis, or complex fractures. This approach changes the orientation of the shoulder so that your normal socket is replaced with an artificial ball, and your normal ball is replaced with a socket into which the artificial ball rests.

Revision Surgery

Because most artificial joints last about 10 to 15 years, you may eventually need joint revision surgery to replace your artificial joint with a new one. Reasons for revision surgery include:

  • Implant becomes loose due to long-term wear
  • Fracture
  • Dislocation
  • Infection

The most common symptoms of a joint that may need replacing are pain and reduced range of motion. An X-ray can confirm your need for revision surgery. Your surgeon will only recommend revision surgery if non-surgical methods do not effectively resolve your symptoms.

Joint Replacement Classes to Prepare You

Outcomes of joint replacement surgery have been shown to be more successful when patients and their family or support person is fully prepared. That’s why we require those requiring a knee replacement or hip replacement to take our joint replacement class. You’ll learn what to expect and how to prepare. The class will be taught by your orthopedic navigator, who will guide you before and after surgery, and call you once you leave the hospital.
