Preventive Care Starts In a Barber Chair

The neighborhood barbershop is at the heart of many African-American communities – a place where men go not only for a trim, but to plug into neighborhood happenings and take part in some good-natured ribbing. “People come to us once a week like they might go to church,” said Ray Lindsey, a barber at Serenity Salon in Trotwood.

Barbers have a bond with their clients that is rivaled by few others in the black community. It was clear that they could play a key role in raising awareness among clients about potentially serious men’s health conditions that might be going unaddressed. So Premier Health recently teamed up with Serenity Salon and two others in Montgomery County: Deeez Cuttz Barbershop in Trotwood, and Man Up Barber Shop in Huber Heights. On select Saturdays, we provide free, voluntary, and convenient health screenings at the barbershops, taking blood pressure and measuring customers’ height, weight, and blood sugar levels, a good indicator of one’s risk for diabetes. On occasion, even larger health fairs will be hosted on-site.
