Inpatient Services

If you or a loved one has a mental health crisis, our inpatient behavioral health units at Atrium Medical Center, Miami Valley Hospital, and Upper Valley Medical Center are available to help you.

At each hospital, our professional team of psychiatrists, nurses, and social workers provides you with a safe, welcoming atmosphere and well-tested therapies to help you get through the crisis and return safely home.

We accept patients with a wide range of mental and behavioral disorders, but we primarily treat people who have:

• Bipolar disorder, with extreme, uncontrollable highs and lows in mood
• Depression, with feelings of sadness and hopelessness, and possibly thoughts of suicide
• Schizophrenia, with distorted perceptions of reality, including hearing voices that aren’t there
• Schizoaffective disorder, a combination of schizophrenia and mood disorder (typically either depression or bipolar disease).

How We Can Help

As a patient on one of our inpatient units, you’ll work with a team of psychiatrists, nurses, and social workers. They will assess you and assist you in setting goals for a healthier, more balanced mindset. We’ll measure your progress frequently and be alert to any setbacks.

Medication is an important part of your care. It can help you feel better, improve your mood, lessen anxiety, and decrease suicidal thoughts or hearing voices. We’ll manage it closely with the goal that you receive the maximum benefit.

We encourage you to attend groups that will help you better understand how to improve your overall physical and mental health:

• How medications work
• Proper nutrition
• Coping skills and life skills
• Recreational activities

A thorough medical examination is also an important part of your treatment. Our doctors may order lab work, imaging tests, or other tests to help identify physical conditions that are contributing to or worsening your illness. We can treat these conditions while you are in the hospital.

Our team will also talk to you about outpatient resources – such as outpatient services at Miami Valley Hospital and community agencies.

Alcohol And Chemical Dependency

At Miami Valley Hospital, we also help patients with mental health disorders detoxify from substance abuse if the situation is not life-threatening.

At Upper Valley Medical Center and Atrium Medical Center’s Behavioral Health Pavilion, we treat alcohol and chemical dependency only as they affect your mental health disorder. We do not offer detoxification or alcohol and drug rehabilitation on site, but we are happy to connect you with appropriate facilities or programs.

Psychiatric Support For Patients On Medical Units

If you are a patient on one of our medical or surgical units at Miami Valley Hospital and have a mental health issue during your stay, your physician can consult our Psychiatric Consultation Liaison Team.

Our liaison team of psychiatrists, nurses, and social workers can assess you and provide crisis mental health services while you are in the hospital. We provide evaluation and treatment for delirium, depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, making adjustments to serious illness, and other behavioral health issues. The team also assesses and treats substance abuse disorders.

At Atrium Medical Center and Upper Valley Medical Center, your physician can consult one of our psychiatrists or behavioral health emergency admissions team members if you have a behavioral health issue.
