Dual-Diagnosis Program
If you have both chemical dependency issues and a behavioral health disorder, our dual-diagnosis program at Miami Valley Hospital can help you address both issues at the same time. For example, you may have a bipolar disorder, and substance use disorder, or live with major depression and marijuana dependency.
Research studies and our own experience support the success of this approach.
You’ll meet with a psychiatrist, who can help decide if medication may be useful in improving your mood, energy, or other symptoms. A doctor can also prescribe Vivitrol® as a medication-assisted treatment if you are working through opioid addiction. Vivitrol helps prevent relapse into opioid use. It blocks the effects of opioid drugs so you can benefit from counseling services.
Our group therapy sessions meet three mornings each week. Typically, you’ll participate in this intensive program three to four weeks.
We’ll help you develop coping strategies to maintain sobriety and manage behavioral health symptoms. For example, we’ll work on:
- Identifying triggers for drug and alcohol use
- Preventing relapses
- Communicating effectively
- Managing grief and loss
- Managing stress and anger
- Developing healthy thought patterns
- Building a supportive network
- Following a 12-step program for recovery
If you have medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease or cancer, in addition to dual-diagnosis, we can work with you to promote self-care, provide hope, and give you a renewed sense of purpose and control.
We also offer family sessions to promote understanding of family dynamics. Through these sessions, we’ll support your family as they learn to support you.
Upon completion of the program, we’ll offer you options for follow-up care with therapists or programs in the community.
