Drive ALIVE
Motor vehicle-related trauma remains the leading cause of teen injury and death in the United States. Through a partnership with the Montgomery County Juvenile Court and the Warren County Juvenile Court we deliver a comprehensive prevention program that highlights risky driving behavior and consequences.
Drive ALIVE is an evidence-based, interactive program that was developed as an alternative to traditional sentencing practices.
The goal of Drive ALIVE is to educate and provide awareness to juveniles about the scope and magnitude of the consequences of deviant behavior behind the wheel of a car. The court acts as the referral source by requiring convicted teens to attend Drive ALIVE as part of their sentencing. This course is open to the community and court-referral is not necessary.
The classes include:
- Small group discussions
- Simulated trauma resuscitation by nurses and first-responders
- Talk by a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) on the effects of alcohol and drug abuse
- Brief session with a hospital chaplain
- Live session in the Miami Valley Hospital Rehabilitation Unit involving activities with physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech therapists highlight the process of recovery from traumatic injuries
- Gripping testimonial from family members and a former trauma patient that show the devastating consequences of destructive driving
- Demonstration of fatal vision goggles with an Ohio State High Way Patrol Trooper who discusses the legal implications of traffic offenses
- Watching an interactive “Make the Right Choice” video
The four-week program meets on Tuesday, 6 to 8:30 p.m. Participants must pre-register and will be contacted to confirm registration.
The course fee is $75 and is payable by person or cashier’s check to the Miami Valley Hospital Foundation.
To register and pay by phone, call CareFinders at (866) 608-3463(866) 608-3463. Please indicate that you are signing up for the Drive ALIVE program through Miami Valley Hospital.
CarFit
Older drivers are often the safest drivers because they are more likely to wear their seatbelts and less likely to speed or drive impaired. However, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, older drivers are more likely to be killed or seriously injured when a crash does occur due to the greater fragility of their aging bodies.
Driver safety programs improve adult driver safety by addressing cognitive abilities and skills. Older drivers also can improve their safety by ensuring their cars are properly adjusted for them. A proper fit in one’s car can greatly increase the driver’s safety and the safety of others.
CarFit is an educational program that gives older adults the chance to check how well their personal vehicles “fit” them. The CarFit program provides information and materials on community-specific resources that can enhance safety and increase mobility in the community.
At a CarFit event, a team of trained technicians and health professionals work with each participant to ensure they “fit” their vehicle properly for maximum comfort and safety. A CarFit check takes about 20 minutes to complete. CarFit is a collaboration with:
- AAA (American Automobile Association)
- AARP (American Association of Retired Persons)
- AOTA (American Occupational Therapy Association)
