Clinical Trials

Clinical studies check the safety and effectiveness of new diagnostic tests, medicines, medical devices, surgical techniques, and treatment plans. At Premier Health, we conduct clinical trials and other original research through the Wright State University and Premier Health Neuroscience Institute to increase medical knowledge and improve care for neurological conditions.

You may be able to volunteer as a participant in a clinical trial. Your doctor will work with you to decide if you are a candidate for a clinical trial.

Research Capabilities

The Neuroscience Institute is a public-private partnership that combines the resources of a biomedical research institution and a leading hospital system. WSU provides National Institutes of Health-funded research strengths and Premier Health brings a large and diverse patient base.

Our partnership also allows us to participate in international study groups, such as the Parkinson's Study Group (PSG), and the Dayton Clinical Oncology Program. These affiliations give our patients access to hundreds of national and international clinical trials.

Clinical neurologists and university-based neuroscientists work together to research:

• Stroke and stroke treatments
• TIA (transient ischemic attack) and TIA treatments
• Aneurysm and aneurysm treatments (including neurointerventional radiology)
• Neurosurgery
• Hemorrhage and hemorrhage treatments
• Movement disorders
• Nervous system disorders

• Parkinson’s disease
• Brain and spine tumors (Neuro-oncology)

WSU’s Boonshoft School of Medicine provides core resources and equipment, such as:

• Laboratory research
• Microscopic imaging

The Food and Drug Administration approves the investigational treatments used in clinical trials and monitors the safety of all participants.

What we learn from our research allows us to safely and effectively take the new treatments from the lab to the bedside.

Current Studies

Clinical trials now underway through the Neuroscience Institute include::

• NBP (n-Butylphthalide) Study. This trial checks the effectiveness of a medicine called NBP for treating acute ischemic stroke within 24 hours from the start of symptoms. Participants receive the medicine or a placebo for 30 days. Patients also get standard supportive stroke care throughout the study.
• Codman Enterprise®. A multi-site study to evaluate a new system for coil embolization used to treat certain intracranial aneurysms.
