Stroke Technology and Research
The stroke specialists at Premier Health constantly work to improve our knowledge of stroke and find new ways to provide better care for patients through diagnosis, treatments and prevention.
Comprehensive, Advanced Stroke Care
As a teaching hospital system and research partner with Wright State University, our doctors train tomorrow’s stroke specialists while caring for you. That means you get a robust level of care from a health system with a small-town feel.
You and your family receive care from senior residents and stroke specialists who take the time to talk with you. When a complex stroke case arises, the entire stroke team collaborates to find the best treatment available.
Our stroke team also attends and presents at the annual International Stroke Conference, where stroke specialists share best practices and learn about advances in stroke care.
Stroke App Improves Treatment Time
Premier Health is one of the first health systems in Southwest Ohio to use Pulsara, a communications app that increases coordinated care for stroke patients and reduces the time it takes to get treatment.
Our stroke team learned about Pulsara at the International Stroke Conference and decided to pilot the program at Miami Valley Hospital, in partnership with three local EMS departments.
The Pulsara smart device app:
- Puts all members of a stroke team on alert
- Keeps every team member up to date with one tap of the app by EMS crews
- Sends the same patient update all at once to EMS, neurologists, CT technologists, nurses, and consulting physicians
Better care coordination can give a stroke patient more time to be treated by clot-busting medicines or interventional care — and hopefully a better outcome. Research shows that Pulsara improves by 46 percent the time it takes between when a patient arrives in the ER and when treatment is given.
Traditionally, EMS calls one stroke team contact, who then calls the other individual members of the stoke team, taking time to relay patient information.
Specialty Neuroscience Care Close To Home
If you need to stay in the hospital after a stroke, the NEUROne videoconferencing system lets you remain in your home community in Southwest Ohio and receive specialized neurological care.
The NEUROne inpatient telemedicine service connects a remote neurologist with inpatients through a secure system. The off-site NEUROne doctor can:
- Interact with the patient, family members and the onsite care team
- Access your electronic medical records
- Order tests
- Help you transition to care after the hospital
Ongoing Education For Stroke Providers
At Premier Health, we work hard to continuously educate our health teams about stroke awareness and stroke response.
We prepare case studies and share trainings with doctors and nurses from multiple departments, as well as with our EMS teams.
- Stroke Update. An annual seminar designed to help health care providers stay current on the ever-changing developments regarding stroke prevention, early detection, treatment, and navigating the continuum of care and recovery.
- EMS and nurse training. Stroke classes for EMS workers and nurses teach care providers how to recognize stroke and the steps to follow to provide the best stroke diagnosis and treatment. The training ensures that you get the best health outcomes if you come to Premier Health for stroke care. Hundreds of EMS workers and nurses participate in the hands-on training each year. The class material is regularly updated and includes the latest research.
