Institutional Review Board
Premier Health has transitioned to external Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) for review of research in which Premier Health institutions are engaged. This review is now being conducted by the Wright State University (WSU) IRB and other Premier Health-designated external/central IRBs.
Premier Health requires that all research projects involving humans as subjects be reviewed and approved by a Premier Health-designated IRB prior to initiation of any research-related activities including data collection, recruitment and screening activities. This policy applies to any of the following:
- Research sponsored by a Premier Health institution
- Research conducted by any employee, faculty, staff, students or agents of Premier Health in conjunction with their institutional duties
- Research conducted by any employee, faculty, staff, student or agent using any property or facility of Premier Health
- Research involving the use of Premier Health’s nonpublic information
- Use of Premier Health’s nonpublic information to identify or contact human research subjects or prospective subjects
The implications of engaging in activities that qualify as research that is subject to IRB review without obtaining such review are significant. Results from such studies may not be published unless IRB approval had been obtained prior to collecting the data. If the IRB does not approve the research, data collected cannot be used as part of a thesis or dissertation.

Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative
The Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) course is required for anyone involved in human subjects research. Modules are customized to individual roles in research with human subjects. Individuals who have already completed CITI training with another institutional affiliation do not have to re-take the training. Simply add the Premier Health and/or WSU affiliation to link an existing certificate. Individuals taking CITI training for the first time should choose the Premier Health and/or the WSU institutional affiliation.
