Carbon Monoxide Screening
Carbon monoxide is a colorless, tasteless, and deadly gas. It takes oxygen from your blood cells, which deprives your body of the oxygen it needs. When too much carbon monoxide builds up in your blood, it can poison you.
Cigarette smoke includes carbon monoxide. Premier Health offers the carbon monoxide screening test for cigarette smokers and those who are exposed to secondhand smoke. The test will indicate if carbon monoxide is present in a participant’s lungs, and if so, how much. The test is widely used in smoking cessation classes to help determine how many cigarettes an individual has consumed.
How Do Carbon Monoxide Screenings Work?
A carbon monoxide screening is a simple breath test. Participants are asked to take a deep breath and then exhale that breath into a special instrument that detects the presence of carbon monoxide. Results, available within a couple of minutes, will be carefully explained to individual participants. They will learn how much carbon monoxide is present in their lungs, and what they can do to lower the amount.
What Is the Ideal Location for a Group Screening?
Because the carbon monoxide detection instrument is small and portable, a screening does not require a lot of space in which to work. Due to the instrument’s sensitivity, a temperature-controlled environment, away from outside entrances, cold drafts, high humidity, and the sun is needed. Some locations that work well are:
- Churches
- Community centers
- Senior centers
- Workplaces
What Will My Group Need to Provide?
We’ll arrive fully equipped with the supplies we need to screen everyone who attends the carbon monoxide screening. Here’s what you’ll need to provide:
- Two or three chairs
- One table
- Large trash can
How and When Can My Group Schedule a Screening?
Each carbon monoxide screening event is limited to 100 people. Booking the event three to four weeks in advance is ideal. But if we’re available, we’re happy to accommodate a shorter notice.
