PSA Screenings
A PSA screening measures the level of prostate-specific antigen, or PSA, in a man’s blood. Results may indicate if a man has prostate cancer. Because prostate cancer often has no symptoms, this test can be the first indicator that cancer is present.
Who Should Be Screened?
The American Cancer Society recommends prostate cancer screenings for men:
- Age 50 for men who are at average risk of prostate cancer and are expected to live at least 10 more years.
- Age 45 for men at high risk of developing prostate cancer.
- This includes African-Americans and men who have a first-degree relative (father, brother, or son) diagnosed with prostate cancer at an early age (younger than age 65).
- Age 40 for men at even higher risk (those with more than one first-degree relative who had prostate cancer at an early age).
What Happens During a PSA Screening?
A Premier Health phlebotomist (specially trained to draw blood from a vein) will take a blood sample from each participant. These samples will be taken to a lab for testing. Results will be provided to each participant as soon as they are available. If
results are abnormal, the participant will be counseled about further testing.
What Is the Ideal Location for a Screening?
An indoor, temperature-controlled location is best. Some locations that work well are:
- Churches
- Community centers
- Senior centers
- Workplaces
What Will Our Group Need to Provide?
We’ll come fully equipped with the supplies we need to screen everyone who attends the PSA screening. You’ll need to provide:
- Access to electricity
- Tables and chairs
- Trash can
How and When Can Our Group Schedule a Screening?
Booking your group’s PSA screening three to four weeks in advance is ideal. But if we’re available, we’re happy to accommodate a shorter notice.
