Hospital Rehabilitation Services
While you’re just getting back on your feet from an injury or illness, our team of acute physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech therapists will provide the support treatments you need while staying with us in the hospital.
Following a sudden medical emergency that requires intensive and immediate medical attention, or a planned surgery, you are likely to be admitted to an acute care hospital setting. The goal in this setting is to be stabilized and treated by the medical team with additional help from our Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and/or Speech Therapy teams, if necessary.
Occupational Therapy
The purpose of Occupational Therapy (OT) services in the acute care hospital setting is to evaluate your current self-care, cognition, and mobility abilities, create a personalized treatment plan to address any impairments, improve your ability to perform meaningful activities of daily living, recommend assistive and adaptive devices, and assist with discharge planning. Patients in an acute care setting typically have a very short stay of just a few days, so the occupational therapist may recommend further rehabilitation after discharge if you have not returned to your prior level of functioning.
Physical Therapy
Physical therapy may be recommended in the acute care hospital setting to help rebuild function in areas such as walking, muscle strengthening, stair climbing, balance training, and transfer skills (such as getting in or out of bed or chairs). Our knowledgeable, caring professionals can guide you through a program to increase strength, improve range of motion, relieve pain, and restore function. Our teams:
- Evaluate your current functional mobility—strength, balance, endurance, range of motion, coordination, sensation, bed mobility, transfer skills, gait, stair mobility, and/or wheelchair mobility
- Create a treatment plan to help restore independence
- Help you work toward specific goals to achieve prior to going home
- Assist with discharge planning, including for home therapy, continued skilled rehabilitation, or outpatient therapy
- Recommend equipment, if necessary
- Provide caregiver training
Speech-Language Pathology
Our Speech-Language Pathologists in the acute care hospital setting will complete a thorough exam before developing a personalized treatment program to help with any impairments in language, communication, voice, speech, or swallowing following an illness or injury. We can help with:
- Aphasia - understanding what others are saying or finding the right words to say
- Cognition - attention, memory, problem solving, or planning issues that affect your daily activities
- Dysphonia - abnormal or bothersome changes in the quality, pitch, or volume of your voice
- Dysarthria - producing clear speech or slurring of words
- Dysphagia - chewing or swallowing food and/or liquids
Using the latest techniques, tools, and technology, our goal is to help you restore any lost function, improve your existing abilities, and enhance your communication through alternative methods, if necessary.
