Diagnosis
If you have had an abnormal mammogram or have had a lump examined by your primary care physician, you’ll generally receive further testing and breast imaging to help get a better look at any abnormal growth. Our goal with these tests is to either rule out our confirm cancer in your breast.
Diagnostic Mammography
Premier Health offers diagnostic mammography services at all hospital-based locations. All of our diagnostic mammography locations offer Genius™ 3D MAMMOGRAPHY™, which provides more detailed views of your breast tissue for a more accurate diagnosis.
A diagnostic mammogram examines abnormalities or questionable areas identified in a screening mammogram or clinical breast exam. It may be right for you if you have an existing breast issue, need additional images to clarify previous results, or need follow-up breast care. You’ll need an order from your physician to schedule a diagnostic mammogram.
Crisp, clear images help our specialists rule out cancer or pinpoint a cancer’s location.
Breast Ultrasound, Biopsy, And Breast MRI
Other valuable tests to evaluate abnormal breast tissue include:
- Breast ultrasound, which uses sound waves to create images of breast tissue and distinguish between solid tumors and fluid-filled cysts. It also can evaluate lumps that are hard to see on a mammogram.
- Breast MRI, uses strong magnets and radio waves to make pictures inside and surrounding the breast. According to the National Cancer Institute, breast MRI may be used as a screening test for women who have a high risk of breast cancer, but the test is more likely than mammography to find a breast mass that is not cancer.
- Biopsy, the removal of a small sample of abnormal tissue for further study in the lab. Pathologists can determine whether unusual tissue is malignant (cancerous) or benign (non-cancerous).
Information from one or more of these tests helps confirm that you do not have cancer or allows us to make an accurate diagnosis about the type and stage of cancer you have. If you have cancer, we can create a treatment plan customized to your specific cancer.
